Project Description

We are happy to announce our second ETA Creative Project for 2021! We are looking for participants aged 16-19 (as representatives of the iGeneration) to create a message to a future generation.

We are all familiar with the time message experiment in which we would enthusiastically pack a capsule with a selection of everyday bric-a-brac, miscellaneous objects, letters and perhaps personal artefacts and then bury in the garden for our future self to one day open in say, 20 years’ time. In this project, we extend this idea to create a message to a future generation, say to the time of your future grandchildren.

Here in the beginning of the third decade of the 21st century, we find ourselves as a human-race living in a world that seems to be on an inexorable trajectory toward ever-increasing inter-connectivity, accelerated time frames and where globalized commercialism goes hand-in-hand with instant individual satisfaction. Yet we also live in a world which has suddenly found itself engaoled in an omnipresent lockdown that has simultaneously impacted at meta-economic, meso-social and micro-personal levels.

  • So how can we envision the future?
  • What messages could (or perhaps even should) we send to the future generations of our species?
  • What lessons can we learn from our experiences today, that we could pass onto our descendants?

As a teenager, these are critical questions for your digital-natives generation: for after all, ...

... you are the students of today who one day will become the leaders of tomorrow.

And it is with this motivation that we launch this creative project: “Messages To The Future”.

Instructions

We do not want to restrict you by insisting that your message should be in a particular file format. It is your choice. Your message can be expressed in written form as a pdf file, a video in MP4 format, or a podcast in MP3 format.

Whichever format you elect to use, it must be an appropriate medium that enables you to explain, justify or argue why your message is relevant, significant, perhaps even poignant, or inspiring; and how your message is explicitly salient and important to a future generation.

The submission form for your message can be found at the bottom of this page under “Upload Your Message.” PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU HAVE ATTACHED YOUR MESSAGE FILE BEFORE SUBMITTING! If you have any questions regarding this project or others, please contact our Creative Projects Coordinator, Willow Schroeder, at willow.schroeder@europe-tutorial.com .

PRIZES

A first, second and third place winner will be chosen in the first two weeks of December 2021. ALL participants will receive an email with an invitation to our “Messages to the Future” webinar, where we will announce the winners and have the winners present their messages and join in a contemporary discussion with a key thinker from the field of philosophy or sociology. This keynote speaker will be announced closer to the date of the webinar.
