Hebrew is a language both ancient and modern. It is one of the world’s oldest living language with an unbroken literary tradition going back more than 3,000 years. It is the primary language of over five million people and it is spoken by over nine million people worldwide. Hebrew is also the language of the Bible (Tanakh or Old Testament) which is both a religious and cultural foundation of incalculable influence, especially if read in the original language. As such a motivation for learning Modern Hebrew is that it is the simplest way into the Bible. However, a further motivation for studying Hebrew is to connect with the life and culture of Israel.
